Aromatherapy for Menopause
Essential Oils & Acupressure for Menopause
Find relief from your menopausal symptoms of hot flushes, night sweats, irritability, insomnia, poor memory, or fatigue through the use of specific acupressure points with the application of essential oil blends.
Learn self-help techniques to use at home. Aromatherapy applied to acupressure points is a very effective way to enhance your acupuncture treatments or other treatment therapies.
Essential Oils ….are the volatile plant essences, in their purest most concentrated form, that have been extracted for use in aromatherapy. Oil is “essential” in that it carries the essence of the plant it was extracted from.
What’s in an Essential Oil?
Essential oils are made up of very tiny particles that enter the body either through the nose, by breathing, or through the skin where topically applied. This is why they are also called volatile oils because they evaporate or turn to gas quickly. The definition of volatile is to be vaporous.
The primary chemicals found in essential oils are: Terpenes, alcohols, aldehydes, esters, ketones, & phenols.
Essential oils with similar healing properties and attributes are combined and blended to make a synergy to treat a particular condition.
How Essential Oils Work: When you breathe in the aroma of an essential oil, the molecules of the oil stimulate receptor cells in your nose. These receptors then transmit information to an area of the brain known as the Limbic system. This system is responsible for managing your emotions, hormones and senses. Molecules also are absorbed into the bloodstream through the lungs.
When applied topically, the molecular structure of the essential oil is very small so it easily passes through your skin and into your bloodstream. The beneficial properties of the oil then enter the bloodstream and travel throughout the body affecting their beneficial results. Some oils are absorbed more readily than others because each volatile oil is different in chemical makeup and particle size.
The following are blends for specific complaints. Mix the formula together then dilute using 5 drops of the blend with 1 teaspoon massage oil. You can use olive oil, vegetable oil, almond oil, or coconut oil. Massage onto the acupressure points that will be detailed following the essential oil recipes.
Hot Flash Blend
Clary-sage 10 drops
Geranium 11 drops
Lemon 7 drops
Sage 2 drops.
Day and Night Sweat Blend
Grapefruit 10 drops
Lime 10 drops
Sage 5 drops
Thyme 5 drops
Water Retention and Bloating Blend
Fennel 5 drops
Juniper 5 drops
Lemon 15 drops
Peppermint 5 drops
Circulation Problem Blend
Geranium 10 drops
Peppermint 5 drop
Patchouli 5 drops
You only need to use a small amount. It should disappear into the skin. Massage the points in a clockwise direction for about one minute each. Use one of the blends once or twice daily. Over a few weeks to a few months, you will notice a difference with how you feel.
Acupuncture Points for Menopause
Heart 8 helps to clear heat for hot flashes, improves circulation, and calms the mind. It is located on the palm, in the depression between the 4th and 5th metacarpal bones, where the tip of the little finger rests when a fist is made.
Heart 8
Lung 7 is found by interlocking your other hand across the thumb web with the index finger falling on top of the radial styloid of the radius. Kidney 6 is located just under the prominence of the medial ankle bone.
Heart 6 calms the mind, stops heart palpitations, stops night sweating along with Kidney 7. Heart 6 is found .5 cun from the wrist crease lateral to the flexor carpi ulnaris tendon. Often this is on the 2nd crease from the wrist. Kidney 7 is 2 finger breaths above the medial ankle bone anterior to the achilles tendon.
These are only a few examples of acupuncture points that help to restore balance to relieve menopausal complaints. If you have trouble locating the points you can always stop by and ask. I’ll be happy to show you.
Eating Healthy
What to eat and what not to Eat: The Chinese Medicine Way to Healthy, Enjoyable Eating.
What should I eat to be healthy? That is a question I believe a lot of people are asking these days. If you are noticing signs of aging, are overweight, are considered obese, underweight, have diabetes, heart disease, auto-immune disorder, cancer, or you just plain want to stay healthy, you might be wondering which diet therapy is best for you.
I believe that a whole foods diet based mostly on plants, while taking into account individual needs, without all the processed foods, is the way to go. This is not a new way of eating, rather it is based on ancient Chinese Medical philosophy. The ancient way to eat for modern people.
Michael Pollan’s book, “In Defense of Foods”, capitalizes on this idea of a plant based diet when he states, “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants”. This is my new mantra!
I have put together some bullet points for you about the balanced way of eating according to Traditional Chinese Medicine. I will describe the philosophy behind healthy eating that engenders a healthy relationship with food. I think it is important to for you to understand what digestion entails (TCM calls this Spleen-Qi Digestion), and how it relates directly to a good diet. In part 2 of this subject, I will give details about what good and bad Spleen-Qi Digestion looks like along with the good and bad habits that leads to one or the other. For further knowledge on the subject of eating whole foods, I highly recommend reading books from Michael Pollan. One in particular, “Food Rules”, can be invaluable in deciphering where and how to shop for real whole food ingredients while avoiding the processed varieties. Another awesome book I found by accident. While browsing the library I found, “Stop aging, Start living: The Revolutionary 2-Week pH Diet That Erases Wrinkles, Beautifies Skin, and Makes You Feel Fantastic” by Jeannette Graf, M.D, with Alisa Bowman. Dr. Graf gives very easy to follow diet guidelines with some nice recipes. Her diet recommendations are very balanced. Although, these books aren’t Chinese Medicine nutritional books, I feel that they reflect many of the same principles of TCM. There are many great sources about Chinese Medical diet therapy that I recommend. My favorites include, “Live in The Balance: The Ground-Breaking East-West Nutrition Program”, by Linda Prout, M.S., “Healing with Whole Foods: Oriental Traditikons and Modern Nutrition”, by Paul Pitchford, and, “Chinese Natural Cures”, by Henry C. Lu.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) evolved over five thousand years ago. It is really amazing that much of what the ancient sages knew about health then, can be true today. The medicine’s core philosophy is based on the concept that everything should be done in balance and moderation. This means balance in exercise, work, play, sleep, diet and more.
Just as an aside, when I speak about moderation in eating, I mean well-rounded, moderate portions, this diet should not include eating fake, processed, and synthesized, GMO, hormone ridden, pesticide and chemical laden junk foods. If you must, do so sparingly!
General Philosophy of Chinese Medicine and Healthy Eating:
-Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) meals focus on whole plant foods including vegetables, beans, sea vegetables, rice, millet, and other grains, with smaller amounts of animal foods such as meat, poultry, and fish than the typical American diet.
-Animal products, fats, oils, are considered concentrated foods; so, although, individual needs vary for animal products, it generally takes a smaller amount than plant foods for balanced health.
-Chinese culinary practices are a major factor relating to the reduced risk and rates of chronic diseases in China that are so prevalent in the United States. They stay slim even though they consume more calories than we do. There was much research documented in Dr. T. Colin Campbell’s book, “The China Study”, giving credence to this claim.
-There are some General Food Rules for Balanced Health for all constitutional types and patterns of imbalance. These guidelines help to Balance and prevent the signs of weak, damp spleen-pancreas Qi and poor digestion. Spleen-pancreas Qi is explained further below.
-Most food in TCM can be used therapeutically depending on quantity (dose dependent), quality, season, and needs of the person. This even includes coffee and chocolate.
-When out of balance, or when a pattern of disharmony is present, Chinese Medicine (TCM) emphasizes specific foods and restricts others to balance the organs and pattern of disharmony contributing to signs of discomfort and disease.
First, it is imperative to understand what healthy digestion is before any guidelines can make sense.
-Good Digestion is Good Spleen-Pancreas Qi, it
Requires appropriate food choices for one’s individual body pattern. Each person may differ in physical needs, mental, emotional tendencies; we each respond differently to foods.
Foods we think are good for us can lead to digestive and other health problems if we are unable to assimilate them properly.
-The organs and tissues that digest our food into body tissue, warmth, and energy are called the Spleen or even better the Spleen-pancreas. It more closely resembles a system and not just one organ. It includes digestive functions of liver, gall bladder, and pancreas as well as their hormones, enzymes, acids, and other secretions.
The pancreas releases most hormones and enzymes involved in digestion.
-The stomach acts like a “cauldron” that receives our food. It should be warm at body temperature, and low pH.
-Food-Qi or vital energy is the equivalent of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy the body uses for warmth and physical activity.
-The key to good digestion is a balance between moisture, dryness, and optimum temperature.
The following post will detail signs of the good and the bad Spleen-Qi Digestion along with bad and good habits that influence our Spleen-Qi Digestion.

Chakra Acupuncture is a combination of Ayurvedic Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
This system creates harmony by treating the root cause of a disease, which is often emotional. These Pattern imbalances come from our predisposition, stress, emotional states, environment, climate, and diet. A pattern of imbalance or root causative factor is associated with a group of signs and symptoms related to one or more of the fourteen main acupuncture channels and their related chakra or chakras.
The chakras are main areas of swirling bio-electrical energy each with a direct link to our physical body as an acupuncture point (acupoint). There are 7 main Chakra energy centers, and 21 minor Chakras. Each Chakra/acupoint connects to an endocrine gland, nerve plexus, organ, corresponding meridian and an aspect of our emotions and personality. For example, a person may be feeling easily frustrated, irritable and short-tempered. He may be prone to angry outbursts and shouting. He may be suffering from migraine headaches as well. A likely culprit would be an imbalance in the liver and gallbladder channels along with the brow chakra.
The treatment involves stimulating the acupoints on the skin using a non-needle technique from an electro-acupuncture device that delivers a gentle electrical pulse in the micro-current range along with shining a specific Color-of -Light on the skin/acupoint (MEA). It is a sequential treatment where Chakra/acupoints are stimulated via essential oils, MEA and/or needles, in a certain order. Then if used, needles are removed. This is a balancing and tonifying technique for maximum results. This may take about 15 minutes. The needleless technique can be used alone, with acupuncture needles, or only acupuncture needles, if you prefer. All needles are sterile and disposable, one time use.
By using the acupoints of TCM, we may influence the flow of chi-energy within the body, which in turn influences aspects of the chakras.
Chakra Acupuncture connects and balances the body-mind-spirit all in one!
Ancient Medicine with a Modern Twist
Dear Patients,
Why I love using Micro-Current Color Light Electro-Acupuncture for my patients is that it combines the time tested theories and techniques of the ancient art of Acupuncture along with modern science and technology of electro-medicine. It is ancient medicine with a modern twist.
I have a great opportunity for you to try the Micro-Current Electro-Acupuncture Therapy. I am offering this service at a reduced fee during the week of August 27-31 as a Micro-Current Electro-Acupuncture Marathon. The rate is usually $100 per session; or $75 per session if you have a 25% discount through your health insurance plan called Healthy Roads, Affinity, OptumHealth Allies, etc.
During this Marathon week the charge is only $30 per session!
(No insurance please, it is considered a non-covered benefit, and most insurance companies do not compensate for the time, knowledge, and cost). There is an additional cost of $15 for therapy pads if they are needed. The pads are good for up to 15-20 uses, and are not shared.
I am proud to be specializing in Micro-Current Electro-Acupuncture. It is used for Facial Rejuvenation, acceleration of wound and tissue healing, relief from acute and chronic pain, chronic illnesses, and soul healing. I am thrilled with the results, and I love the treatment techniques.
What is Micro-Current Electro-Acupuncture with color light?
It is a highly effective holistic treatment using gentle, often sub-sensory, electrical currents applied through acupuncture points. Microcurrents are delivered in the millionths of amps range as opposed to the high-intensity milliamp currents used in traditional electro-acupuncture, TENS units, and other electro-therapies. Microcurrents are more harmonious with the body’s innate bioelectric activity. This can be far more effective for long-term pain relief and support of homeostasis than milliampere electro therapies.
Results are even better when a unique combination of dual streams of microcurrent and specific colors of light are used together. Color light enhances cellular and organic functioning, ATP production and facilitation of various mind-body healing processes. Both light frequencies and electrical charges are transported throughout the body via protein molecule chains. These energies pass through the crystal-like structure of connective tissue, which is the substrate for the meridian system.
Efficacy of treatment results is boosted by selecting colors (wavelengths) of light. Some therapeutic benefits are noted below:
Blue for insomnia, pain relief, inflammation, acne;
Purple for Anxiety, pain relief, inflammation, acne;
Green to tone, lift muscles;
Yellow for Anger, to drain lymph;
Violet to Calm, relax;
Red for depression, guilt, PTSD, scars, poor circulation, hypofunction;
Magenta to Boost adrenals/kidney function, balance emotions, infertility;
Orange to Decongest, build thyroid function, lessen guilt;
Red, blue, green, others for Facial Rejuvenation.
How is it performed?
We use the Acutron Mentor which delivers a sub sensory micro-current with color light frequencies. In practice, it is actually very similar to traditional acupuncture. Using the exact same system of Chinese Medicine, I place the Q-tip probes onto specific points along the meridians of your body. The device then delivers gentle electrical pulses between two points. I also choose specific colors based on their therapeutic effects. This helps restore the healthy flow of Qi (energy) through your body, removing any blockages and clearing out stagnant areas, thus creating a stronger and clearer experience of health and well-being.
Diagnosis and Treatment is applied in sequential steps, with evaluation to see its effects, and achieve positive results within each session. This is in contrast to leaving needles in 20 minutes, and then waiting until the next visit to find out if it worked or not. This treatment plan embraces diagnosis of the causative factor in disease and meridian imbalance. Overall this allows for shorter treatment times with outstanding results.
How did I learn about this form of electro-medicine?
I first learned about the Acutron Mentor Device a few years ago quite by chance. I started getting emails about the Acutron for MicroLight Therapy, and Facial Rejuvenation. “Somehow, somewhere I must have signed up to receive this information?” At first I ignored them, and deleted the messages. Eventually, something piqued my interest causing me to read one then another one. Eventually I found myself checking out their web site, etc. I found about the seminars offered through their company, and I attended one. I went with the resoluteness that I was not going to purchase this machine. I was just going to learn about electrical stimulation with acupuncture to earn some continueing education credits. The founder and speaker, Darren Starwynn, was fabulous! The thing that sticks out foremost in my mind is that it was not a hard sell, and there was so much to glean from the seminar without ever purchasing the Acutron. However, we did learn how to use the Acutron with hands-on techniques. The results I was witnessing were amazing. It got me thinking that with the Acutron, I could reach more people that won’t try Acupuncture because they are needle phobic.
Plus, the results for Facial Rejuvenation using Micro-Current with Color Light far outweigh those using Acupuncture needles alone. I could see it for myself.
I had to have it!!
Why did I decide to specialize in Micro-Current Color Electro-Acupuncture?
I have been using it with awesome results for the Facial Rejuvenation.
Recently, I have been using it more and more for other health conditions. I have noticed that it excels at relief from acute and chronic pain; emotional and Soul Healing for complaints such as anxiety, depression, stress, inappropriate or excessive emotions of anger, grief, sadness, mania, fear, apathy, obscession, worry and over-thinking, etc.
Translation- it can help you:
- Feel more calm and relaxed and “easy going”.
- Feel more energized as a mood “pick me up” if you are sad, gloomy, or lack motivation.
- Feel down to earth and more centered when you are feeling like you are going in many directions, with a scattered mind, easily distracted or unfocused mind.

-
Improve your confidence and emotional strength to perform a difficult task
- Promote smooth sailing to settle a nervous stomach, and digestive GI support for bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation, irritible bowel, etc.
- Help you with, “Letting Go”, for recovery from the loss of a loved one, loneliness, disappointment, loss of a dream, grief, and sadness.
-
When you haven’t got time for the pain: bursitis, tendinitis, arthritis, gout, rotator cuff injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, sprains and strains, lumbar pain, sciatica, neck pain, whip lash, TMJ, shoulder pain, frozen shoulder, hip pain, foot pain, ankle pain, knee pain, cancer pain, nausea, migraines, headaches, PMS, menopausal complaints, and rehabilitation after surgery or injury. This list can go on and on.
My patients that have experienced the effects of Micro-Current Electro-Acupuncture report that it gives more comprehensive and longer lasting results.
I am so excited about this therapy that I would like to have most of my patients using it. This is definitely on the cutting edge! It would behoove me not to utilize this therapy that I have at my disposal for the benefit of as many people as possible.
Remember, it is only $30 per treatment during the week of August 27-31. What would you be willing to do or how much would you be willing to pay if this therapeutic modality helps you to feel better, and happier?
Sincereley,
Michele M. Arnold, L.Ac.
