How Your Herbal Diagnosis Works
A different diagnostic system than acupuncture.
Herbal medicine requires a deeper, more detailed assessment than acupuncture.
Where acupuncture can be assessed quickly, herbal formulas must be matched precisely to your internal pattern.
Your diagnostic visit includes:
Tongue assessment — color, coating, shape, moisture
Pulse assessment — depth, strength, quality
Abdominal palpation — tension, temperature, tenderness
Symptom pattern review — digestion, sleep, hormones, stress
Seasonal and constitutional factors — how your body responds to climate, stress, and change
Why this matters.
Herbal formulas only work when they match your pattern.
This diagnostic process ensures your formula is:
- accurate
- safe
- effective
- tailored to your body’s needs
- adjusted as your condition changes
Customized Herbal Formulas
Instead of treating a long list of symptoms separately, I look for the pattern underneath them — the root imbalance that is creating the symptoms you’re experiencing.
This pattern‑based approach allows one well‑designed formula to support multiple areas at once, without overwhelming your system.
Start with what matters most.
I begin by clarifying your top concerns:
What is your #1 chief complaint?
What is your #2 priority?
How are these symptoms affecting your daily life?
This keeps your treatment focused, meaningful, and manageable.
Identify your internal pattern.
Your symptoms, tongue, pulse, abdomen, and health history all point toward a specific internal “climate,” such as:
Qi deficiency — fatigue, low resilience
Yin deficiency — dryness, heat, poor sleep
Qi stagnation — stress, tension, irritability
Phlegm/damp — congestion, fogginess, heaviness
Blood stasis — fixed pain, poor circulation
Yang deficiency — coldness, low metabolism
This pattern is the root of your symptoms.
Build one clear, focused formula.
From there, I choose one base formula that matches your pattern, then:
add 2–4 targeted herbs for your main symptoms
include harmonizing herbs to protect digestion and support absorption
This keeps your formula:
simple
effective
easier to tolerate
easy to adjust as you improve
Treating the pattern, not just the symptoms
Even if you come in with several concerns—like menopause symptoms, sleep issues, anxiety, digestive changes, brain fog, or joint pain—
they often stem from one or two underlying patterns.
When we treat the root pattern, multiple symptoms can improve at the same time, without needing multiple formulas at once.
Your formula evolves as you do
As your symptoms shift, your formula shifts with you.
We adjust it at each visit so it stays aligned with your current needs.
