Essential Oils:

Essential oils are the volatile plant essences, in their purest most concentrated form, that have been extracted for use in aromatherapy. Oil is “essential” in that it carries the essence of the plant it was extracted from.

  • Extracted from flowers, leaves, seeds, wood, stems, of plants.
  • Produced by plants to protect from seasonal/environmental threats.  bacteria, insect attack, and decay.
  • 50-70 times more powerful than herbs.
  • Wide range of uses, from cosmetics to foods to natural health solutions.

What’s In An Essential Oil?

Essential oils are made up of very tiny particles that enter the body either through the nose, by breathing, or through the skin where topically applied.  This is why they are also called volatile oils or aromatic because they evaporate or turn to gas quickly.  The definition of volatile is to be vaporous

The Primary Chemicals Found In Essential Oils Are:

Terpenes, alcohols, aldehydes, esters, ketones, & phenols.

Synergistic Blends:

Essential Oils With Similar Beneficial Properties And Attributes Are Combined And Blended To Make A Synergy For An Enhanced Aroma, And Uses.

I like to blend ginger, cinnamon, and clove with fractionated coconut oil for digestive support, and to aid in curbing a strong appetite.

Another blend I enjoy is a few drops each of rosemary and ylang-ylang rubbed into my hair and scalp in the morning.  I smell like I just left the ‘Spa’!  I also love the shiny way my hair looks and feels.

Examples of oils that I often use along with acupuncture are Lavender, Peppermint, Rosemary, Geranium, Wild Orange, Clary Sage, and Thyme. These oils that are great at calming the mind and relieving tension in the body.

Licensed acupuncturists can dramatically increase the effectiveness of acupuncture by using essential oils.

History Of Essential Oils:

They have been used throughout history, although most notably in the last century or so. The last decade or two research and science backing have shown us greater and greater potential of their benefits, and expanded our awareness of how to use them safely and effectively, even through pregnancy, birth, and early childhood.

The human body is intelligent and that the essential oils (found in every- day food and drink) are no stranger to the human metabolism.  We have evolved with plants and are adapted at metabolizing them. The body knows how to break them down and utilize them to balance the human physiology…As is evident, most oils are suitable for use during pregnancy; the real danger comes when the dosages are incorrect or irresponsible. Essential oils work with the body, not against it. The body always remains in control with proper dosage of oils.

Essential oils can have various properties and attributes.  Their uses include:

    • Calms skin irritations

Angelica, bergamot, grapefruit, lemon, orange, tangerine, and other citrus oils are photosensitive and may cause a rash or dark pigmentation on skin exposed to direct sunlight or UV rays within 3-4 days after application. If you are planning to be in the sun-do not use these oils, or if you suffer from photosensitivity.

Epileptics and those with high blood pressure should use caution with hyssop, basil, wintergreen/birch, nutmeg, rosemary, peppermint, sage, tarragon, and tansy oils.

People with sensitivities should test a small amount of oil on an area of sensitive skin, such as the inside of the upper arm, for 30 minutes, before applying the oil on other areas.

Essential Oil Spotlight

Protective BlendAs one of doTERRA’s most popular oils, doTERRA On Guard is a powerful proprietary blend that supports healthy immune function when used internally* and contains cleansing properties.

This is the oil that seem to put in the diffuser the most, especially in my Acupuncture Practice.  It smells wonderful, like cinnamon, clove and orange.  It makes me feel good knowing that it supports my body’s ability to function as it should.

I also apply it to the bottom of my feet every night before bed, and along my spine.  If I ever feel my body weakening, I put a drop under my tongue right away!

This is one oil that I don’t want to be without.  And, I only trust doTERRA essential oils and supplements for my patients, family, and myself.

It isn’t just about purity of the oil, which it is 100% pure, but it’s the quality due to the chemical profile and where they source their oils from.  doTERRA has exclusive rights most of their growers.
